Minion Flip Flops Summer Kids Craft

Bust summer boredom with these adorable minion flip flops! Whether your kids like the cute yellow minions, the crazy purple minions--or both--they're sure to love this easy craft. We created these at Boo's Minion Birthday Party, and I love the way they turned out.

Boo's wish for a Harry Potter birthday party quickly disappeared as soon as the new Minions movie came out. Suddenly, it was Minion party or bust! I'm actually glad she switched. It was really fun coming up with Minion projects. Each girl made a pair of mismatched flip flops -- one purple and one blue. Ready to make your own? These Minion flip flops are super easy, so let's get started.

Materials:

• Basic flip flops -- Blue or yellow for the yellow minion, and black or purple for the purple minion. Blue and black look the best, but when you're shopping sales, sometimes you have to take what's left! (I purchased mine at end-of-summer sales and paid less than $1/pair.)
• Yellow and purple fabric (I purchased one yard of each and had more than enough for 10 pairs of flip flops.)
• ¼" zinc fender washers (1 per flip flop--I found mine at Home Depot for $.12 each.)
• Giant wiggly eyes. (1 per flip flop)
• Loctite Vinyl, Fabric and Plastic flexible glue
• Glue dots (I used Elmer's)
• A small piece of rough sand paper

Instructions:

1. Assemble the eyes by attaching the wiggly eyes to the fender washers with glue dots.

2. Cut the fabric into strips  about 1" x 5.5". (It doesn't need to be exact.) Plan on using 16-24 strips per flip flop (depending on the size of the shoe).
3. Rough up the bottom of the fender washers and the spot where the eyeball will sit on the flip flop with the sand paper. The rougher edges will make the glue adhere better.

4. One strip at a time, tie the fabric strips onto the flip flop. Consistently use a right over left or a left over right tie. (Do not tie a square knot. Just tie the fabric once.) Leave a small spot in the center of the flip flop for the eyeball.
5. Apply the Loctite fabric glue to the flip flop and the back of the eyeball. Use a clothes pin to clamp the eyeball in place. Let it dry for at least an hour. (It should dry longer, but 1 hour was enough time for the glue to set enough for the kids to take the flip flops home after the party. I suggested they wait a while before wearing the flip flops to make sure the glue is fully set.)
6. Repeat with second flip flop.
7. Wear with pride!
