A few weeks ago, I saw some gorgeous crocheted Christmas trees. I wanted to make my own, but there was just one problem: I don't crochet. So, being the crazy lady that I am, I set out to create some yarn Christmas tree decor that did not involve any sewing. And, guess what? I love the way they turned out!
RELATED: Easy Sock Snowman Kids Craft, Halloween Feather Tree
The candy cane colored tree and the red tree are both made with a knotted yarn method, and the white tree is created in a totally different way. (I'll be sharing that tutorial--which is perfect for kids--on Juggling Act Mama next week.)
Easy Knotted Yarn Christmas Tree Decor
Materials:
- 1 large foam cone
- 2 skeins of yarn (you will use about 1 ½ for a the large cone)
- 600-800 satin pins (I used extra long, but regular would have worked also)
- Large Solo cup and red yarn (optional for stand)
- Fabric scissors
Instructions:
- Cut yarn into 6-8" lengths. (Long enough that you can tie a knot. The more nimble your fingers, the shorter you can cut the yarn.)
- Tie each length into a single knot with a loop at the bottom.
- Starting at the bottom of the cone, hang each loop over the edge and secure it with a single pin through the knot and into the cone.
- Continue around the bottom with a single layer of loops. When you pin, line up the bottoms of the loops, not the knots.
- Start the next row of loops ½ to 1" above the first, but lay the loops so that they fit in between the loops below. (The pattern will be staggered.)
- Continue creating new rows all the way to the top of the cone.
- When you get to the very top of the cone, trim the yarn edges that go above the top so that they are even with the top of the cone.
- Pin a final layer of loops into the top of the cone. (The loops will stick straight out to the sides.) Train loops down with a rubber band over night.
- If they still stick up, tack them down loosely with pins. (Don't push the pins in all the way.)
Easy (and Cheap) Pedestals
- You can use these trees with or without pedestals. Some inexpensive pedestal ideas include:
- Spray painted candlesticks
- Small containers wrapped with yarn
- Red Solo cup with yarn wrapped around the bottom to cover the white edge
As usual, I made all the mistakes on this one so that you don't have to. If you are doing a large cone, just trust me that one skein of yarn will not be enough. I got three quarters of the way to the top when I ran out of yarn. I tried taking it apart and moving the rows farther apart, but I still ran out of yarn. Just buy two so that you don't have to run back and forth to the store like I did!
Have fun! I love these because I'm always looking for tall decorations.
Thanks for stopping by today. While you're here, check out some of my other ideas for Christmas.
