One Simple Tip for Organizing Kids Clothes and Drawers

Published: Aug 11, 2026 by Heidi Fowler. This post may contain affiliate links 2 Comments

Have you ever noticed how hard it is to keep kids' clothing organized? It seems like once you fold everything and put it away, the kids pull everything out to get to their favorite outfit. Then it's all a mess, and the cycle starts again. I'm excited to share a great trick for organizing kids' clothes and drawers.

Kids' clothing rolled neatly in an open dresser drawer so every item is easy to see.

The towel drawer in my kitchen is always overflowing. I have to stuff everything down in order to close it. Maybe it's because after folding laundry, I just throw the pile in the drawer and shove it closed. Yesterday, I found a brilliant idea for organizing kitchen towels, and I think it will work great for organizing kids' clothes, too!

Why folding clothes doesn't work

Have you ever watched a kid try to find something to wear?  If they're like mine, they pull everything out looking for that one special item that always seems to be at the bottom of the pile. Then, once they've found that treasured item, they leave all the clean clothes on the floor in a heap.

I understand their frustration.  When the clothes are all neatly folded and piled on top of each other, it's hard to know what's in the drawer.  You have to reorganize the drawer every time you want to choose an outfit.

Roll your clothes instead

The fix is simple: Instead of folding clothes, roll them! Rolling makes all the difference!  Even my four-year-old can roll up her own clothes to put them away.  It's brilliant! I'll never go back to folding.

Notice that everything in the drawer is visible. That means no rummaging through the drawer and tossing things on the floor.

And, yes. Lu's entire wardrobe is made up of skorts.  I can't talk her into wearing anything else.  She wears them "as is" in the summer and with leggings in the winter.  It's a good thing her kindergarten allows skirts as part of the school uniform!

Are your drawers too big to handle tiny kids' clothes? Try these drawer dividers from Amazon (affiliate link). They turn a bottomless pit into an organized space for kids (or adults).
