Last year, I entered a baking story contest. My story didn't win, but the experience was so funny that I want to share it here. It was not one of my best "Mommy Moments," but at least I can laugh about it now!
It was just a simple yellow cake—a treat for a rainy day. Little did I know that our baking experience would quickly become a hair-curling adventure!
I was having a “good mom” day. You know what I mean . . . one of those rare moments when you put aside your to-do list and find some precious time to do something fun with the kids. The house was semi-clean, the kids were bathed and dressed, and a little chair was pulled neatly to the counter so that Bear (age 4) could “help” bake the cake while her little sister (age 1) played nearby.
Bear blissfully held the spinning mixer, and little sis crawled up to her chair. Bear bent down to chat, and the perfect moment was shattered. Before I could say, "Bear, your hair is too close to the . . ." her hair was wound up all the way to her head. I’m not sure if it was brain-cell evaporation due to pregnancy #3, or just the surprise, but my brain completely shut down. The thought never occurred to me to stop the mixer. I held it in shock as Bear's hair coiled around the mixer all the way to her skull. I snapped out if it just in time to yank the plug before she lost all of her hair!
Missy ended up with a yellow, batter-covered Princess Leah-style bun on one side of her head. She lost some hair, but was remarkably unscathed emotionally. It’s a good thing that kids bounce back quickly. As for future baking moments . . . I now make sure that kids with long hair wear pony tails while baking!
Have a great day! I hope this post made you smile.

Well, with one boy and another boy on the way, I don't have to worry about hair, but my son is such a grabber that I unplug the Kitchenaid whenever I let him come close to add an ingredient! Glad you can laugh about it now! :-)

Wow. I've never even thought about this when baking with my very long haired daughter, ouch! That must have been quite something to get out of her hair. Glad she didn't lose much of her hair. :-)
