When Boo turned 8 this summer, she wanted to have a special "Un-Slumber Party." I'll be sharing more details about the full party in the coming weeks, but I'm starting today with the game that was the hit of the party--Spin the Bottle! (Yep. I let second graders play spin the bottle at my house. Aren't I a great mom? Yes--if you consider that the bottles were full of nail polish!!!)
The best things about this game are that it's easy, the kids love it, and everyone wins! The hardest part for me was creating the spinner, but you don't have to, because I'm sharing mine! (See the end of the post for details and the download link.)
Spin the Nail Polish Bottle
Materials Needed:
- An adult to supervise! (Or two.)
- A spinner. I used the spinner from my kids' Hi, Ho Cherry-O game. I covered the game box in white paper and printed and cut my background "Spin the Bottle" paper with my Silhouette Cameo. Next, I carefully removed the plastic arrow spinner (it popped right out), laid my design over the Hi, Ho Cherry-O spinner background, and popped the arrow spinner back in place.
My design for the Silhouette is sized for Hi, Ho Cherry-O, but if you don't have that game, it will still work. Simply print the background on your Silhouette (or print and cut out the 8x8" pdf version) cut a small slit in the center, and slide it carefully over a spinner from any game.
- 8 bottles of nail polish (a different color for every bottle). Don't break the bank on the nail polish! If you watch the sales at Drug Stores, you can get them for less than a dollar a bottle. I got mine on sale for 30% off at Walgreens. I'm not positive, but I think they were about 70 cents each. (Or, if you are lucky right after Christmas, you may find a large nail polish gift pack for half off.)
- Cotton balls. The girls don't really need cotton between their toes, but it sure makes them feel more grown up!
- A drop cloth or old blanket/towel to protect your floor from spills. I know from experience that nail polish is really hard to get out of carpet, clothing, tile grout, skin, and doll clothes. (Tired and busy Mom of a newborn + curious toddler + nail polish left out = disaster!) The drop cloth may seem silly, but I promise it is worth it! (That's actually the birthday girl in the picture below. She's 8 now. I guess a six year break is enough time to trust her now with nail polish!)
How to Play:
- Kids sit in a circle around the game board. The first player spins the spinner to choose a bottle of nail polish. She then paints one toe with that color (or asks an adult for help).
- Play continues as each player spins and paints one toe nail at a time.
- Game is over when all players have painted all ten toes.
- If you have a large group of kids, consider dividing the group in half. At Boo's party, half played this game while the other half worked on another craft (I'll post it soon). When they were finished, they switched. Any more than six kids at once, and the kids might get bored waiting for their turn.
Don't forget to take a picture of the final look!
I love all of the colors! Do you think I can get away with this look? :) When the party is over, use the nail polish bottles as party favors. (During the game, I had the kids write down their top three favorite colors, and then I divided up the colors accordingly--making sure that the bottle they got was one of their top three. I purchased one bottle per girl, plus a few extras in case there were several that liked the same color.)

For the spin the bottle game...use Mini marshmallows between the toes...works better than cotton balls and they will still be talking about it for years to come...my daughters friends have never forgotten..and it's been six years...every time they sleep over they ask for the mini marshmallows for their pedicures!!
