When Boo turned 8 this summer, she wanted to have a special "Un-Slumber Party." I'll be sharing more details about the full party in the coming weeks, but I'm starting today with the game that was the hit of the party--Spin the Bottle! (Yep. I let second graders play spin the bottle at my house. Aren't I a great mom? Yes--if you consider that the bottles were full of nail polish!!!)
The best things about this game are that it's easy, the kids love it, and everyone wins! The hardest part for me was creating the spinner, but you don't have to, because I'm sharing mine! (See the end of the post for details and the download link.)
Spin the Nail Polish Bottle
Materials Needed:
- An adult to supervise! (Or two.)
- A spinner. I used the spinner from my kids' Hi, Ho Cherry-O game. I covered the game box in white paper and printed and cut my background "Spin the Bottle" paper with my Silhouette Cameo. Next, I carefully removed the plastic arrow spinner (it popped right out), laid my design over the Hi, Ho Cherry-O spinner background, and popped the arrow spinner back in place.
My design for the Silhouette is sized for Hi, Ho Cherry-O, but if you don't have that game, it will still work. Simply print the background on your Silhouette (or print and cut out the 8x8" pdf version) cut a small slit in the center, and slide it carefully over a spinner from any game.
- 8 bottles of nail polish (a different color for every bottle). Don't break the bank on the nail polish! If you watch the sales at Drug Stores, you can get them for less than a dollar a bottle. I got mine on sale for 30% off at Walgreens. I'm not positive, but I think they were about 70 cents each. (Or, if you are lucky right after Christmas, you may find a large nail polish gift pack for half off.)
- Cotton balls. The girls don't really need cotton between their toes, but it sure makes them feel more grown up!
- A drop cloth or old blanket/towel to protect your floor from spills. I know from experience that nail polish is really hard to get out of carpet, clothing, tile grout, skin, and doll clothes. (Tired and busy Mom of a newborn + curious toddler + nail polish left out = disaster!) The drop cloth may seem silly, but I promise it is worth it! (That's actually the birthday girl in the picture below. She's 8 now. I guess a six year break is enough time to trust her now with nail polish!)
- Kids sit in a circle around the game board. The first player spins the spinner to choose a bottle of nail polish. She then paints one toe with that color (or asks an adult for help).
- Play continues as each player spins and paints one toe nail at a time.
- Game is over when all players have painted all ten toes.
- If you have a large group of kids, consider dividing the group in half. At Boo's party, half played this game while the other half worked on another craft (I'll post it soon). When they were finished, they switched. Any more than six kids at once, and the kids might get bored waiting for their turn.
Don't forget to take a picture of the final look!
I love all of the colors! Do you think I can get away with this look? :) When the party is over, use the nail polish bottles as party favors. (During the game, I had the kids write down their top three favorite colors, and then I divided up the colors accordingly--making sure that the bottle they got was one of their top three. I purchased one bottle per girl, plus a few extras in case there were several that liked the same color.)
I'd love to hear how the game works at your next party! You can download the spinner files in printable pdf and Silhouttte cutting file format by clicking on the Silhouette download button below.
If you only want the printable file without the Silhouette cutting file, click the pdf button below to open the file to print.

That picture always makes me laugh, Melissa. She was so proud of herself! I'm glad I thought to take a picture. Laughing about it is a whole lot better than crying! :)

I don't have girls, but if I did I would definitely use this Nail Polish Spin the Bottle game for a sleepover! So cute! Pinned to my "children" board on Pinterest.

HAHA!!! I have a picture of my 3 year old with nail polish all over her too!!! That made me laugh so hard! What a fun game, I'll have to pin this for my daughters next party :)
Heidi@OneCreativeMommy
I'm glad you got a picture, too! It's so much easier to laugh about it than cry! Thanks for pinning and stopping by to comment! I hope you were able to get the nail polish out of the important stuff. I got it mostly out of the carpet (just in time to put the house up for sale), but the baby doll's outfit is still striped with pink to this day!

Heidi
Thanks, Julie. I just pictured a bunch of college girls playing this game in their dorm room! (Totally made me smile.) I hope your nieces love it.
Jessica
What a CUTE idea!! My girls are 2 and 3 right now, so this wouldn't be for a while down the road, but I'll be pinning for later use. :)
Heidi Fowler
Sorry I missed this comment is January, Jessica! I hope you and your girls have fun with this game when they are a little older.
Christine
Very entertaining game. Also, a good way to ensure that the nail polish doesn't end on other places like the furniture!
Heidi Fowler
Thanks, Christine. The kids really love it. I definitely supervise to make sure the nail polish ends up where it belongs!
tracy

I just stumbled upon your site. This is the most fabulous idea for a party for girls! You are so creative!
I have a link party that I am trying to grow. I invite you to share this — and a couple of other ideas — at my Grandma Ideas Sharing Time link party at http://grandmaideas.com. It runs Wednesday through Friday night at midnight (Mountain Daylight Time). I think my readers would enjoy this as much as I do!
Hope to see you there,
Nina
Heidi
Thanks for the compliment and the invite, Nina. I'm all linked up. Good luck with your new party.
Marie
This is such a great idea!! I love turning this into a much more innocent and fun party game for young girls. Heck, I would totally do this with my friends now. Lol
Heidi
I'm glad you like it, Marie. The kids had a really fun time, and I think you're right. Grown up girls would love this game, too!
Michellene Hoey
For the spin the bottle game...use Mini marshmallows between the toes...works better than cotton balls and they will still be talking about it for years to come...my daughters friends have never forgotten..and it's been six years...every time they sleep over they ask for the mini marshmallows for their pedicures!!
Janette
I love the idea of spin the nail polish bottle
JenS
Thank you for sharing the Studio file. We are planning on playing this for my daughter's 10th birthday party!
Heidi
I hope you had a great time with the party, Jen. Sorry I missed this comment.
Christy Boswell
I can't get the pdf to work?!?
Heidi
Hi, Christy. This is one of my older posts. I usually share pdf files in a different way now. When you click the download button, you should get a zip file with a folder inside. The pdf is inside the folder. Were you able to get that far? I can upload the pdf my new way (you click on the button and it will open the pdf in a new window), but I might not have time for a couple of days. I just tried the download on my computer, and it worked fine. If you need it right away, you might try switching browsers. If you do need me to upload the file another way, please let me know.
Jennifer
I can’t get the spin the bottle file to download properly; do you have a pdf file? Love the idea!
Heidi
Thanks for letting me know there was a problem, Jennifer. I have added a pdf file with a separate download button and fixed the link to the Silhouette file. Have fun!
Izzy Lewis
