Are you ready for some fun pancakes for Halloween? The girls and I had fun experimenting with a Gluten-Free Pumpkin Pancake recipe, but my Easy Pumpkin Shaped Pancakes Tutorial can be used with any recipe. Ready to learn how to make shaped pancakes? It's easy and fun!
How to Make Shaped Pancakes
Shape pancakes are surprisingly simple. All you need is pancake batter and two clean, empty ketchup/mustard plastic bottles (the kind you buy for picnics). Before you begin, cut the tip off of one of the bottles. This bottle will be used for filling in the pancake shapes. The other bottle will be used for drawing the outlines.
- Fill both bottles with pancake batter and heat up your griddle or pan. Using the uncut bottle, draw the pumpkin outlines. (Three ovals and a stem work pretty well.)
- Using the cut bottle, fill in the shapes. By the time you are ready to fill, the outlines will have cooked slightly--giving your shapes a nice outline. If you don't want the outline, complete one pumpkin--outside edges and inside--before moving onto the next shape.
- Flip the pancakes and finish as you normally would.
- Give the kids a handful of mini chocolate chips and let them get creative!
- Top with syrup, powdered sugar, whipped cream and cinnamon sugar, or whatever your family loves best.
*Important!* When you prepare these pancakes, you need to carefully watch the stove temperature. The kids might be able to squirt out the first batch, but after that, the heat rising from the pan will burn their fingers. I keep my temp at medium and sometimes adjust it lower and higher as I am cooking. I would leave the pancake preparation to the adult, and the pancake decorating to the kids! (I usually create shapes out of half of the batter, and then cook the rest in circles. Preparing the whole batch in shapes would be very time consuming!)
