Easy Flowered Headband Tutorial for Kids

Published: Jul 23, 2022 by Heidi Fowler. This post may contain affiliate links 31 Comments

Using this simple headband tutorial from Family Fun Magazine, my family and I created these adorable flowered headbands.  *Click on Band of Blossoms Template in the May 2012 issue.  (Dad even helped, although he wouldn't let me take a picture of him wearing one!)

Flowered Headband Tutorial

Directions

  1. Using fabric scissors, cut an 18-by 4-inch piece of T-shirt fabric, and fold it in half so that the short ends meet.  Trace the headband template onto the fabric and cut it out.  (Since I was planning on making lots of headbands for a party, I unpicked the stitching in the t-shirts so that I could get as many headbands as possible.  I used t-shirts with holes and/or stains--a great recycle!)
  2. Trace the flower and circle templates onto the scraps of felt.  (To make things quicker, I skipped the tracing and just cut away.) Cut out the shapes and pin them onto the headband in whatever pattern you like!  (I cut out tons of headbands and shapes before the party and then let the kids choose out of a big pile.)
  3. Sew the pieces in place with X-stitches.  Attach the elastic (3-inches long) with two X-stitches on each end.  (I used a narrow elastic, so I only used one X.  The elastic was a little tough for 7-year-olds to stitch through, so I did this part for the kids after they finished the rest.)

The X's are created with a single length of embroidery thread.  Knot one end before stitching, and close each X by tying a knot at the back, cutting the thread, re-knotting it, and moving onto the next X.

Mom Tip

*I discovered that this is a great project to do with one or two kids, but the sewing is a little difficult for a ton of 7-year-olds at once. Almost all of them needed help with every stitch. The blunt needles are tough to get through several layers of felt. (I used embroidery needles.) I did try the project before the party, but my mistake was not having a kid try it. Of course it was easy for an adult!

Here are my cute models:

Please don't pin this image

Boo was so excited about hers that she wore it to church on Sunday!  She was super proud that she made it herself.  (And I was proud, too!  She did a great job.)

I absolutely love Family Fun Magazine--and they're not even paying me to say that!!!  I can usually pick five or six ideas I want to try in every issue.  (You'll definitely see me post more!)  Did you know that you can find most of their activities online?

You'll find all of my art party ideas here.

for stopping by!  Have a great day.
